AN OVERVIEW OF THE CONFLICT IN SUDAN
It has become part of the daily feeds we encounter these days that Sudan is thrown into full pledged conflict ignited by power greed of two Generals. Though, some have a working theory that the conflict is more of a proxy war between United States of America, its allies and Russian Federation, this I intend to address at the end.
The conflict is between the Chief of Sudan Army, General AbdulFatah Al-Burhan and the Head of Sudan paramilitary group known as Rapid Support Force (RSF); General Dogalo (Hamedti). The duo were hitherto friends who worked together in overthrowing President Omar Al-Bashir's regime in 2019 when full scale protest against his three decades dictatorship was waged for days in Sudan by pro-democracy activists. A transition government was then formed headed by civilian, Hamdan and General Al-Burhan as the Chief of Army staff with his counterpart, General Dogalo AKA Hamedti overseeing the Rapid Support Force (RSF).
Why would a country have two independent military apparatuses? Rapid Support Force was a rebel group went by the name Janjaweed and was used by President Omar Al-Bashir in 2013 to fight the insurgents in Dafur after which they were formally recognized as RSF. This marked the beginning of the tension when RSF were given similar ranks with the State Armed Forces after their trainings. It was said that Omar Al-Bashir intentionally allowed RSF to grow stronger so as to avert any possible attempt by the State Armed Forces to topple his administration as RSF was reporting directly to him.
Fast forward in October 2021, General Burhan alongside General Hamedti brought an end to Hamdan civilian transitory regime and the duo ran the State with Burhan as President and Hamedti as Vice President. It will interest you to know that Burhan was in charge of the State's affairs, its economy and agriculture while Hamedti was in charge of gold mining, a venture that made him so rich than one could ever imagined plus his command of RSF, these are enough to make him dare even the president which eventually happens.
The two agreed to chart a course of handing the power to democratic regime and Al-Burhan brought about the integration of RSF into the State Armed Force in two years, a move that was opposed by Hamedti which he felt it should be, rather, in ten years. The integration will clearly strip Hamedti of his military command, and his political influence and amidst this tension, RSF troops began to spread to strategic locations in Sudan; and before you could say Jack, things began to happen recording hundreds of deaths and thousands of injured casualties mostly civilians.
Is Sudan a proxy war? Well, a theory has it that General Dogalo (Hamedti) had sealed a deal with Russia to establish their Naval Base in Sudan Coast of Red Sea, a move that US felt is a threat to her and its allies and therefore should not happen. US then was said to have used all its resources in planning of getting rid of RSF, a move that escalated to full scale conflict. Whatever the case may be, it's high time, Africa and its leaders begin to prioritize the lives of their citizens over their ego, greed and Western influences.
We pray that Allah will soon restore peace in Sudan, amin!
