COST OF BEING A MUSLIM - A REVIEW
'The Cost of Being a Muslim' is the title of this week talk presented by Mal. Mahmoud Abubakar under the umbrella of Albaqiyah Heritage Foundation; charitable organization with a vision of creating a well-informed Muslim community through intellectual discussions, promoting research and pursuit of knowledge in all perspectives, and conducting programs on social welfare, health and entrepreneurship.
The presenter, perhaps being a banker, associated 'cost' with the title which we later came to know as responsibilities attached to anyone being a Muslim. We are made to understand that the cost of being a Muslim is to submit yourself to all the provisions of the Deen without any reservations. This implies being steadfast on the path despite the odds... saying no to environmental temptations, economic shortcuts that defy Islamic principles, or peer and media pressure that tally not with the Deen. Each parameter was supported by multiple illustrations in the course of the talk.
He further highlighted how it involved taking pride in the Deen despite having the belief in our mind, we should proclaim it with our tongues and our actions should corroborate the two.
Moreover, withstanding oppression for being a Muslim as witnessed through history which is happening in some parts of the world today is all part of the cost. Yet, one's reward for being a Muslim is not just worth it but truly great, a place mind has never imagined, ears have never heard of anything as beautiful and eyes never seen anything similar in splendor. It's Jannah in sha Allah!
Learning the basics of the Deen is part of the struggle needed by all and sundry to understand how to worship our Lord and to even convey same to others - Daawah.
